Why You Need Both a Resume and a Strong LinkedIn Profile
Why You Need Both a Resume and a Strong LinkedIn ProfileWhy You Need Both a Resume and a Strong LinkedIn ProfileIf LinkedIn had its way, there would be no such thing as a resume anymora. We may be heading in that direction, but we certainly arent there yetThe reality is that you need both a well-constructed resume and an optimized LinkedIn profile for an effective current job search. They should share a certain amount of information and complement each other, but not be identical.Your LinkedIn profile can draw recruiters and hiring authorities to you when you show up in their search results. It can be the pathway for them to reach out to you to request your resume. And, virtually every company of a certain size will require a resume from you for their applicant tracking system at some point in the hiring process.See 10 Ways Social Media Can Help You Land a Job.Conversely, when you submit your resume to companies, you can assume that when it draws some interest, reviewers are also lik ely to search for you on LinkedIn for additional information.Your LinkedIn profile and resume should both portray the arc of your career. A quick scan of both documents should easily reveal an identical backward chronology of your work history, job titles, dates of employment, skills and a personal branding statement. Both should also demonstrate your value whenever possible by including specific quantification of your achievements.Stories vs. Results. Typically, the modern resume will list no more than three or four bullets for each job youve held. However, each of them should tell a story in miniature What was your overall challenge, what did you do to meet the challenge and what happened because you did whatever you did? However, thats too much information and doesnt fit the tone of a LinkedIn bullet point. Here it is great to put yourself forward and say something like I accomplished X. A simple one- or two-line statement is quite sufficient for LinkedIn when it is results-orient ed.See 8 Ways Millennials Can Build Leadership Skills.Length. Generally speaking, your resume should be one or two pages, although in certain circumstances it might merit an addendum, such as for works published. By contrast, there are, of course, no fixed length pages online. You can add quite a bit of information to each section of your profile, and you can include a variety of additional documents Word, PDF, PowerPoint, sound clips and images.Your limited resume length should force you to pare down your overall story to the bare bones, but on LinkedIn, you can show examples of presentations, portfolios and even append your resume. Note, however, that to prevent scamming and identity theft, you should omit your physical address, phone number or other information that can make you vulnerable.Formality vs. Sociability. Your resume is a formal document which says by its very nature I want to be considered for a job. Personal pronouns I and he/she should not be found anywhere on a r esume. Your audience is typically limited to recruiters, HR professionals and hiring authorities. A resumes sole objective is to get someone to contact you to say Wed like to talk with you about such-and-such position.By contrast, LinkedIn is, at its essence, social media. It is all about you connecting with, and interacting with, other individuals. It is preferable to speak of yourself using the I pronoun. Make it friendly and engaging instead of stuffy and formal. There are many solid reasons to have a LinkedIn profile in addition to searching for a new job, and it shouldnt be presumed that just because you have a profile you are looking to make a move.Remember that your profile isnt seen just by hiring authorities, but rather by any and all of your first-degree connections, all the way out to third-degree connections. You may come up as a search result for any number of people who are seeking anything that you might have included in your profile, not necessarily having to do with employment.See The 25 Best Jobs of 2017.Testimonials and Endorsements. From time to time you might see a short testimonial quote employed in a fancy resume these days. But that is hardly the norm, nor is it expected. However, one of your LinkedIn profiles key sections will be a listing of your skills. You can list up to 50 skills in this section, and any of your contacts can endorse you (without your request or permission) for any or all of them. It is a good idea to list all the key skills you have that are relevant for the jobs you seek, as hiring managers can search for people with specific skills.People can also provide written recommendations for you, which can give kompetenz employers testimonials up front about the kind of employee you will likely be, and how others have valued their professional relationship with you. Its worth it for you, as well, to identify several of your connections whose work style and accomplishments you value and initiate recommendations for them.Be s ure to keep both your resume and profile complete and up to date. Make use of them in the proper way and you are sure to advance your job hunt prospectsHappy hunting

Engineering the Stadium Experience
Engineering the Stadium Experience Engineering the Stadium Experience You stand there with your very fashionable foam finger, your hot dog, and a t-shirt that shows the team you root for. Or possibly bleed for. But did you ever wonder about the people who helped that stadium become reality, the ones who created your experience? Some of them are mechanical engineers.Plumbing Is CriticalDuane Pinnix and his company RMF Engineering helped make MT T Bank Stadium, home of the Baltimore Ravens, happen. The first thing you have to understand is that stadiums are large projects, not something that takes a couple monthsit might be two to four years, says Pinnix, president of RMF. From an engineering standpoint, people dont realize what main areas we work on.In the case of the Ravens stadium, one of those is plumbing. Its actually a huge part, as big as hospitals or labs but not as many system types as those, says Pinnix. One big difference between a sporting venue and other facilities is acco mmodating toilet facilities. In laboratories or hospitals, everyone doesnt use the rest room at the same time a sporting event is quite the opposite. We had to test with tons of people using it at once. I think it was 40,000, he says. Good thing we did. There were problems. We found obstructions in drainage lines. It was valuable testing for the first game, so only clean water would come out of the bottom drains.Pinnix says as much as 50% of the stadium hits the restroom in a 30-minute time period. That makes water supply and drainage critical.RMF Engineering team working on M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland. Photo source RMF.comEnergy Analysis Is KeyAnother major undertaking for the Ravens Stadium was on the energy services side. A new emergency power plant between the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Ravens facilities created a need for lifecycle costing on how to serve both of them. That all came down to energy analysis and also looking at the field drainage only five feet a bove the flood plain, he says.As far as air specifications, according to his companys web site The HVAC systems deliver low temperature chilled water (36 degrees F), low temperature air (45 degrees F) and heating hot water (200 degrees F) to over thirty air-handling systems providing 600,000 cfm of conditioned and ventilation air for the facility.Pinnix says the longevity of the building and its electrical systems definitely dont match up. Systems are designed to have about 20 years of longevity whereas the structure is designed for a 50-100-year lifespan. Its important to have fixtures that are sustainable long-term, public lighting thats efficient, he says. According to the companys web site The electrical design included dual incoming 15,000-volt services from the local utility, and fourteen facility owned and maintained 4,160-volt substations located throughout the stadium. The emergency electrical loads for the stadium are supplied from a generator plant which is located on the site outside of the building.Pinnix says engineers bring organization to a stadium project. Our job is to get involved and firm up schedules that tie to an opening day, he says. And the recognition of when its done is seeing thousands of fans out there.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. The first thing you have to understand is that stadiums are large projects, not something that takes a couple monthsit might be two to four years.Duane Pinnix, president, RMF Engineering

We lebensabschnittsgefhrte with job boards, and speak with hiring mana gers and recruiters to better understand what makes an effective resume, and funnel that feedback back into our service. Learn Augustines advice for getting the most out of your TopResume feedback below.Writing your resume is intimidating - its a vital step in the process, yet the rules by which its judged often seem arbitrary. Augustine sympathizes There are so many rules when it comes to writing a resume that will beat the robots (i.e. the applicant tracking ordnungsprinzip) and entice a recruiter. . . Use your review as a gut-check to make sure your resume is headed in the right direction and to guide your edits. The TopResume review provides that gut-check by offering a two-part analysis. The first part evaluates content and design. Augustine explains We provide objective feedback on what your resume is doing well and where it is missing the mark, from both a content and design perspective. For instance, many job seekers focus on detailing their tasks from their former job, rat her than explaining the results of their work. Others are missing key components, such as a professional summary where relevant keywords are usually peppered in. Andstill others go overboard with the design, making it challenging for a recruiter to quickly skim a resume and pick out the important information. The second part of the TopResume review is all about the applicant tracking system (ATS) which Augustine refers to as the dreaded bots, that scan, store and rank job applications. Augustine points out that 90 percent of Fortune 500 companies use ATS software. She explains Its job is to interpret the information in your resume to determine what skills and experience you possess, and eliminate the job applications that are not a fit for the role .Augustine explains how this part of the review can help you revise your resume One of the most valuable components of our free resume review is the ATS scan . In this section, we show you exactly how the ATS will summarize your experi ence, what information it picks up (and misses) and which skills it believes best describe your expertise. For instance, here at TopResume, weve found that 10 percent of those who submit their resumes for review are using a resume where portions of their contact information cannot be detected by the ATS. Once you know whats being lost in translation with the ATS, you can take steps to fix it.To get past the ATS, Augustine advises Augustine explains that one of the most common issues she sees is candidates underselling themselves. She points out They look at their resume and think of it as a record of their work history, when, in fact, it should be treated as a marketing tool and an opportunity to tell their career story as it relates to their job goals . She encourages job seekers to change their focus Employers care about how youve contributed and what youve accomplished, as they assume your past performance indicates how you will benefit another company in the future.Another key priority is writing your resume with the ATS software in mind. Augustine explains Applicant tracking systems are complicated software programs that arent able to read between the lines on your resume. You have to understand how they read and interpret your resume - or work with a professional who does - to ensure your final resume will make it past this initial electronic gatekeeper.Augustine explains what a great resume looks like to her A great resume clearly explains what job youre targeting and why youre qualified for that position. It highlights your measurable success by detailing the results of your work. The content within the resume is curated to focus on the details your future hiring manager will care about because theyre relevant to the role youre pursuing. The design is clean and simple so its visually appealing, and easy to skim and interpret. And, your resume is formatted appropriately and optimized with keywords to ensure the ATS will properly identify your key skills and experience. Augustine know how it feels to be on the hunt. She writes I want job seekers to know that theyre not alone. If youre feeling stuck, dont be afraid to ask for help. There are plenty of free services and resources available to help you keep your job search on track.
